Derfor droppede Mark Romanek "The Wolfman"

Hjertet var ikke med længere.

Det var til stor forundring, da instruktør Mark Romanek efter ti måneders arbejde på "The Wolfman" forlod projektet, kun tre uger inden optagelserne skulle starte. Som nødløsning overtog Joe Johnston (Jumanji) i stedet roret.

Filmen blev aldrig en succes, den indtjente langtfra sit budget, og på RottenTomatoes scorede filmen 33%. Derfor er Romanek nu klar til at tale ud om bruddet og om, hvad han egentligt synes om filmen.

"I had to see it, because if I never saw it, I would kind of been plagued by curiosity of how it came out," siger han om, hvorvidt han har set filmen. "I recognized some of the sets we designed, and some of the locations I've picked, and some of the actors that I've cast, but the rhythms of it and the emphasis of what was important in that film was pretty much what the producers always wanted and I wasn't so keen to do."

Han fortsætter: "[I left] for that reason, we couldn't get on the same page about what the film should be. Benicio [Del Toro] and I, and Tony Hopkins, we all had higher hopes for what it could have been, and the producers didn't see it that way. I lost my mojo about it, and I felt like if they are investing $125 million into something, they should have a director who is fully passionately invested in it and it was kind of a mutual decision."

Det var ikke nemt for Romanek at forlade filmen efter at have brugt næsten et år på den, men i længden blev projektet for forsinket til, at det kunne bære for Romanek.

"I was excited to work with Benicio Del Toro and Tony Hopkins and Emily Blunt. I was excited to have those resources. I wanted to make a populist, entertaining movie, but Benicio and I wanted it to have some kind of weight to it and some subtlety to it. And we thought we could have our cake and eat it too. Big studio just wanted the cake."
